Her Story
Eczema for me has always flared due to stress, meaning during exams and events, my anxiety becomes exacerbated, with extra worries of irreversible scaring and damaging my skin. Then I experience further stress when treating such eczema, as many creams doctors are eager to prescribe are steroid creams which extended use of can lead to your skin becoming immune to such creams leading to even stronger creams being necessary, steroid cream addiction can have horrible withdraws leading to flaky dry skin all over, these concerns lead to such a viscous cycle of anxiety, that awareness and further solutions for eczema are vitally necessary.
Ultimately the worst consequence of eczema is the life you miss out on, whether it’s not going in the sea to not irritate your condition or not wearing certain clothes to hide flare ups. These limits placed in life can lead so easily to such a feeling of loss of control of your own experiences. Empowering people with eczema allows the shame to be removed so even if the condition is not being improved the consequences of eczema can be drastically reduced as people feel more comfortable doing everyday activities and don’t live in fear of judgement. To remove this judgement it is important to build up a sense of community, which is what we are doing through Embracing Eczema, through sharing stories of our personal experiences.
